The best card, ranked by math
"Best card" lists are usually ordered by who pays the site most. This one is ordered by a deterministic engine over issuer-verified facts — pick a category, set your spend, and see every card's actual dollar value, with the work shown.
Best card by category, computed
The top five cards in our catalog for each category, ranked by annual reward value at a reference spend, using conservative floor point values (why floors) with category caps applied. Ranked by math alone — nobody pays for placement. Computed 2026-09-15 from the verified catalog (v3.1 (64 cards)); your own numbers scale with your spend in the tool below.
If you carry a balance month to month, stop here: paying it off beats every rate below. These numbers are for people who pay in full. The interactive tools enforce this.

- Fees are shown but not subtracted from a single category: an annual fee amortizes across everything a card does, not one line. The leakage calculator weighs your whole wallet, net of fees.
- Rotating categories (e.g. Freedom Flex's 5% gas) are quarter-bound and need activation — they are the best answer only for the stated quarter, and revert to base afterward. Every rate traces to an issuer source with a verification date; how we verify facts.
- Some travel rates are scoped: an airline or hotel co-brand's big multiplier applies only to that brand's own purchases, and a few premium cards bonus flights or direct bookings only. Scoped rows say so inline — their dollar figure assumes your travel spend fits the stated scope, and overstates mixed travel.
- Citi Custom Cash is valued at its 1% base — its adaptive 5% top-category rate can't be verified from a primary source, so it understates for many holders. Catalog is early (v3.1 (64 cards)) and growing.
